Three essentials

  1. Clean only what is visible.
  2. Stop if the foreskin resists. Do not forcibly retract it.
  3. When natural retraction becomes comfortable, the child can learn to rinse and replace the foreskin himself.

When symptoms need attention

Persistent pain, bleeding, fever, scarring, repeated infection, urinary obstruction, a trapped retracted foreskin, or blue or black discoloration should be evaluated by a qualified clinician. Some diagnosed conditions have conservative treatment options.
